Why GIST?

High-standard education

At our school, we follow a state-of-the-art curriculum that blends the accelerated and competency-based German curriculum with the highly respected Ontario Curriculum. We are proud of the results of third-party inspections and standardized tests, both Canadian and German, which provide strong evidence of the school’s overall quality. We hold the prestigious Seal of Excellence, awarded by the Federal President of Germany.

Benefits of Multilingualism

Research shows that learning a second and third language in childhood provides lifelong benefits for the brain, personal growth, and career opportunities. Usually, bilingual children outperform their monolingual peers by grade 6 and have an easier time learning a third language - such as French, which is part of GIST’s curriculum, too.

Transition easily

At GIST, we follow the German and Canadian curricula to ensure an easy transition into both systems. Whether your stay in Canada is short-term or long-term, we provide maximum flexibility for whatever the future holds for you. With our IB program, we offer the world’s most renowned university entrance certificate that allows our students to study everywhere around the world - Germany included.

Individual support

We want to bring out the best in every student. This is why we limit our class sizes to provide an outstanding student-to-teacher ratio. Our students are well-known by each of our teachers and are supported and challenged individually and according to their talents. As a result, our students usually outperform their peers.

Learning how to learn

Starting in Kindergarten, our students learn to be independent - because we are convinced they can! Throughout their school career at GIST we strongly encourage our students to approach problems from various angles and to arrive at solutions on their own. In other words: Our students learn how to learn. And become self-organized, initiative and resilient problem solvers as they grow up.

A strong community

The whole is more than the sum of its parts. Our school community consists of parents, students, teachers, staff members, board representatives and partners, who all work hand in hand to make this school feel like home. With our school events, parent council activities and Ambassador program, we ensure that new families are quickly integrated into our school community.

What others say about GIST

“I often reflect on the wonderful education I received at GIST. The small class sizes and the great teaching staff led to a personalized and high-quality education, which created a solid base for my future.”

Lena Donald, Sr. Assistant Customer Strategy & Planning Manager Unilever

“Despite great reservations about the change from a private to a public school, the transition to the German school system went smoothly. Our older son was even further advanced in Math and German.”

Family Becker

“Our boys, then aged 4 and 7, felt very comfortable, integrated and valued from the very first moment on. Even today, they often talk about their classes at GIST.”

Family Beuchel

Meet our Family Ambassadors

We are very proud to offer our ambassador program to new and existing families. Ambassadors are trusted and long-term school community members and wonderful parents at the GIST. These families have various experiences in different grades and can give valuable insights into our school life. We are therefore happy to present you with the ambassadors and support you in connecting with one of them. This opportunity is especially great for newcomers to Toronto for first meaningful connections, receiving helpful advice, and getting to know the school community. If you are interested in meeting one of our ambassador families, please email us at admissions@gistonline.ca.

  • Family Beharry-Siegel

We chose GIST because it offers an education with purpose. The school equips our children with real skills that will enable them to engage in this yet unknown future. The vision of GIST is to make its graduates lifelong learners who are prepared to shape their professional paths. Our family is proud to be part of this unique school.

  • Family Dejak

We were warmly welcomed into the school community as a local Toronto family with no ties to Germany or German language. Going into our sixth’s year with the school, with five children spanning kindergarten to grade 9, we continue to feel as supported as we did in the beginning. We were initially drawn to GIST as an alternative to the Ontario public school system. We value the strong influence of the rigorous German curriculum as well as small class sizes and plenty of individual attention.

  • Family Gort

As a Canadian/Austrian family, the GIST offers us a unique experience to benefit from a combined German and Canadian education. Our daughters enjoy the international environment, high quality curriculum, and community feeling. The teachers at the GIST really know our children and provide them with support, opportunities to excel, and the chance to develop themselves individually.

  • Family Schwanzer

We appreciate the combined German and Canadian education the GIST offers, equipping our children with language skills and cultural understandings that will enable them to connect with their grandparents and family in Austria and continue their university education wherever they choose. We’re also glad for the GIST community of involved parents helping each other out.

  • Cheques have been a very reliable payment method over the last few years. We can submit them when they are due. With payment plan A you would have the option to pay via Interac e-transfer or wire transfer, all other payment plans require the submission of cheques. However, we use Interac e-Transfer for all other payments, e.g. book invoices.

  • The registration fee of $150 is due upon submission of the application for admission form. The acceptance fee of $2,500 is due upon submission of the enrolment agreement and upon confirmation of enrolment. The acceptance fee is generally due two weeks after acceptance and may be paid by cheque or via Interac e-transfer. If enrollment occurs during the year, the acceptance fee is due along with tuition fees.

  • There is no set enrollment period or admission deadline. You may well change jobs or move to Toronto during the school year. Therefore, we accept new students at any time during the school year, provided there are openings. Especially in kindergarten, we may reach our capacity limit. The sooner we know of your interest and enrollment, the better we can plan and ensure you get a spot.

  • Children who will be 3 years old by December 31 in the year of enrolment can be accepted into our pre-kindergarten. Additionally, children should be toilet-trained and able to go to the bathroom reliably.

  • Yes, wearing the school uniform is mandatory for all school children. In kindergarten, uniforms are worn for special occasions and once a week. Please refer to the school dress code to find out which items of clothing are part of the school uniform. You can order school uniforms online as well as directly from our supplier ‘InSchoolwear’.

  • Twice a week students have the option to order a meal with the Lunch Lady Program. Once a week we offer a Pizza Day. On all other days we ask parents to pack an appropriate lunch for the children.

  • Depending on the schedule classes usually end at 1:15 pm. After that, you can register your child for afternoon care either until 3:15 p.m. or until 5:30 p.m. During afternoon care, homework is done, reading assignments are completed, and friendships are made. In addition, we offer various clubs and activities in the afternoon.

  • We do not offer afterschool care for our Pre-K children as we do not have the required sleeping accommodations.

  • As a German School Abroad, we work accordingly to the Thuringian and Ontario curriculum. Lessons in the primary school are taught mainly in German. Beginning in lower secondary school, grades 5 to 9, instruction is increasingly in English.

The regular French program begins in grade 3. The GIST curriculum for French is based on the highest German curriculum standards for French. It is competency-based, clearly structured, and directly linked to our excellent teaching and learning resources.

  • At our school, we offer the appropriate German program for each child, responding to the very individual language skills of our school children. At GIST, we work with a “Three Step German Program” that reliably introduces your child to the German language (Step 1: GermanFasttrack), constantly expands and develops language development (Step 2: GermanPlus), and addresses further language challenges (Step 3: GermanPro).

  • Language acquisition takes time and effort. Occasional setbacks are to be expected when growing up bilingual. This is what makes language support so important. GIST offers free, intensive language support in German, English and French.

Students receive additional instruction in small groups led by language support experts. We offer classes for different ability levels so that each student receives the support they need. In addition, the team-teaching setting in regular classes allows for individualized support and gives teachers ample time to help students reach their full potential.

The GIST French curriculum is modern, competency-based, and aligned with the German standards for French as a second language. Since all teaching and learning materials are written in both French and German, our students are constantly presented with language challenges that help them become confident French speakers and creative problem solvers.

  • Basically, we teach in German as well as in English. From kindergarten to primary level, we teach 90% in German. From grade 5 on, there is an increase in English to a ratio of roughly 50/50.

  • Our school is trilingual. Next to German, and English, our kindergarten students start learning French in a playful way with French lessons once per week. Starting in grade 3, French is an integral part of the timetable.

  • At GIST, we teach according to both the German curriculum (Thuringian curriculum) and the Canadian curriculum (Ontario curriculum).

  • We are an “Excellent German School Abroad” awarded by the Federal and State Inspectorate and offer our students an attractive STEAM_MINT profile. This is why in mid-November 2021, we received the “MINT-freundliche Schule” (STEM Friendly School) designation.

STEAM_MINT @ GIST follows the teaching principle of inquiry-based learning and offers the opportunity to ask questions, collect ideas and conjectures, try things out and conduct experiments, observe and describe, record and discuss results. In the process, students receive a comprehensive education in a learning environment that links scientific work with knowledge in the natural sciences and humanities.

  • The students learn cursive writing with a fountain pen (“Füller”) in grade 2. Cursive writing continues until grade 9. However, “exercises” only take place in grades 1 and 2. The acquisition of a fountain pen is mandatory.

  • Parents play an important role at the GIST. At the beginning of the school year, parents from each grade level elect two parent representatives. Together, the parent representatives make up the GIST Parent Council. GIST parents and their representatives support the students and the school. We are proud of our good and constructive cooperation between home and school.
